6 Movie Scenes with Kick Ass Songs

Friday, February 12, 2010 at 10:07AM Music can make or break a film for me, and these are some of my favorite scenes with the best music. Also, I like rambling about music.
* Kill Bill, Santa Esmeralda - 'Don't Let me be Misunderstood'

This is the point where the Bride and O-Ren Ishii finally meet alone, and the fight begins. Just watching this scene gives me chills. This is one of the best uses of a song in a movie I have ever seen. Tarantino is a man who takes his soundtracks very seriously, and i love his soundtracks dearly, but this scene blows me away every time. The song was also edited extremely well. The full version of the song is around 13 minutes, but it's such a good song, you can't help but get into it. The song song just builds the tension in this scene so well, it is really beautiful.
* The Devil's Rejects, Lynryd Skynryd - 'Freebird' ( SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen the movie yet, do not watch this scene)

A lot of movies have used this song. It's fucking Freebird. But none of those movies executed it as well as The Devil's Rejects. TDR did a good job with the Allman Brothers' 'Midnight Rider', but by the time you get to this part of the movie, you're emotionally involved, and you're with them, and 'Freebird' was just a perfect match for it. This is another scene where you can't help but just completely get into the movie. It's a wonderful ending.
* Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Heart - ' Crazy on You'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-hKoBtTCZc
While not as cinematically beautiful as the last two scenes, this one just cracks me up every time. I've always loved this song by Heart, but ever since I saw Harold and Kumar I can't help but laugh every time I hear it. While the humor may not appeal to everyone, this shit is CLASSIC!
* Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Origin of Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YO9FpWX57E
Technically this can song can be considered cheating, since it's a song from a musical , but i'll be damned if I don't want to just jam out and sing along every time I watch this scene. I had wanted to see this movie for awhile, but when I finally watched it, and it got to this scene ( which is fairly early in the movie), I was hooked. The story of the song along with the animation completely pulled me into the movie. There are a lot of great songs in Hedwig, and I was very tempted to put ' Wicked Little Town' instead, but The Origin of Love won out.
* Wayne's World, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady

When I think of songs in movies, these are two of the songs that I think of first. Growing up i used to watch the hell out of Wayne's World, and these scenes always stuck out in my head. I bet all of you have known someone to bang their head to Bohemian Rhapsody while in the car, and Garth's dance to Foxy Lady is just comedy gold.

I totally agree with your comments on 'Don't Let me be Misunderstood'. How Tarantino manages to take a very Japanesey samurai style fight and turn it into a old west showdown - the way he blends the generes and blurs our lines of comparision - there is nothing like it that I know. This is an ideal example of the correct way to do it. I think you need to find the 6 worst uses of music in a movie, as well.
